VIEWPORT 04 / THE POSITION NO ONE HOLDS

The sync tools and the forums, and the want that sits in between them, unanswered.

Today's products fall into two kinds, and neither does what ScreenTalk wants to do. On the left, tools like Teleparty that sync a screen for people you already know. On the right, Reddit and Discord, where people talk about a show after they have watched it. In the middle sits the want neither answers: a stranger at your pace, on a scheduled night. That cobalt circle is the slot ScreenTalk wants, and it is empty. The dashed cobalt lines are what people actually want, which no product has built yet. Hover the circles or the cards to read each one. These views read how strong ScreenTalk's intended position is, not how many users it will get.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Two kinds of product. The empty slot in the middle.

Today's products come in two kinds, and they have nothing in common. The sync tools, Teleparty and the rest, do one thing: play the same video at the same second for people you already know. The forums, Reddit and Discord and Letterboxd, do another: host the talk after the show. One syncs the screen, the other hosts the talk, and neither finds you anyone to watch with. The cobalt circle in the center is what neither builds: a stranger at your pace, on a scheduled night. The dashed cobalt lines are what people actually want, which no product has built, because people ask for a partner at their pace and the field offers tools to sync a screen and forums to talk after the fact. A want nobody serves is a position nobody holds. Taking it is ScreenTalk's whole claim, and it lives or dies on whether enough of those people can be found in the same place at the same time.
